In the third grade, there was an art contest in my classroom. I was stumped and didn't know what to draw. I saw the girl next to me drawing a cat. So, I decided to draw one too. Well, I won first place in the contest. Then, I began do take a liking to birds. Everyday, from the 3rd grade thru the 5th grade, I would go to the library and read every bird book I could find. After awhile, I knew over 200 species of birds in America. I just became a wildlife freak. I started hiking in the nature at a young age, looking and watching animals in their own habitat. Learning animal calls. When I was 13, I saw my first elk herd and was fascinated. I began to track them everyday after school and on the weekend I would follow them for hours. One time I followed them for 8 hours and became a little lost and very hungary. I had to take a nap to gain energy and was awoken by bear fighting in the brush. Eventually I back tracked and found my way home. In high school, I would draw talons on my work folders, not really knowing what or why. Now, I understand because I am an eagle specialist and all the other caver's take picture of my eagle's to use as a guide and it is the talons and beak of the eagle that catch's people's eyes the most. Also in high school, I was one of the best gas welder the school had ever seen. I won awards at competition's and first place over 36 other schools. then, my welding teacher had me re-do the welding board that displays all the types of welds with my welds and to this day the welding board is on display at the high school for every new welder to learn by. After high school, I became a fabricator for every welding shop I could find in the greater eugene area. I always became the foreman within a week or two, but never received the pay I thought I was worth. When I was 21, I did my first chainsaw carving. I wanted to carve a wolf head and didn't realize that the nose had to protrude outward so it ended up being an owl! I was into logging at that time and noticed the other carver's. So I wanted to try. Actually, I was out falling timber by myself and at the end of the day, I was walking out and noticed a huge duff log laying down and with my 36" bar I outlined a bear walking. It was easy! That was my very first attempt at chainsaw art. Soon, I began to carve bears, eagles and other wildlife. I wasn't very good at bears. It took me eight years to figure it out. The eagle I had no problem right of the bat! I became self-employed ny the age 21. I started my own tree climbing business. I would do arboriculture for my friends, family and word of mouth. At 24 I contracted for the forest service. I climbed over 5,000 trees in 7 years. I created wildlife snags in the forest. By this time I was getting pretty good at chainsaw art. At the age of 31 I decided to take a chance and try chainsaw art as a full time job. I went to a chainsaw art carving competition in Reedsport Oregon. I didn't know what category to compete in. I knew my art was good so I jumped right into the pro division. It was a 3 day event. I did a sculpture of an eagle coming out of the splashing water with a trout. It sold before I finished it for $1,000. I placed 2nd in pro and averaged a thousand dollars a day in sales vending my products in the event. This was the eye opener I needed to stay a full time carver. I started my business in my friends back yard and sold them word of mouth. Then, my younger brother was killed in a logging accident in Montana so I moved there for a year to settle my mom down. Sales in Montana was very very hard. I moved back to Oregon on the Mckenzie hwy and opened my very own Gallery on the direct highway out of my driveway. My prices went up three times from Montana. I did that for six years. Every year getting better and better. Inventory going faster than I could make it. I kept raising the prices and the inventory kept going faster than I could produce. I met a girl at a competition and she lives in L.A. We built a gallery down there on Topanga Hwy In Chatsworth, California. In the same time as in the Mckenzie gallery I trucked art every month for a year to L.A. It was a really good market. I sold art to famous singers, actors, and movie producers. Some of my art was in T.V series and commercials. They wanted to put my eagles in the movie American Legion, but negotiations didn't settle and at that same time I ended my Cali trips. Now, I just moved to Sunriver, Oregon and I moved my gallery to my uncle's property on Highway 97 near Lapine, Oregon. This is the best vending area I have ever had! Soon, I want to start bronzing my eagles and dolphins and build a high end gallery here in Lapine.
